Back to School Basics for Teachers

Well, so much for summer break. The teaching grind is just around the corner. Yeah, yeah, two months off isn't long enough, but hey, it's pretty good.

So, now it's time to start getting in gear to go back to the professional attire and mindset, early morning rising, and don't forget to get your bladder in shape so that one daily visit to the rest room will be enough.

Okay, let's go down the checklist for the things you'll need to get prepared for the inevitable day:

1. Don't forget to wait until the last minute to get your teacher supplies at the teacher store so you'll have time to make an hour worth of phone calls while you're waiting in line, because all the other teachers waited for the last minute also.

2. Get started writing your lesson plans for the first couple of weeks, but don't get too attached to them, because you know they'll change once you get in the swing of things.

3. Remember to agonize over picking that first day's book that you'll read to your class. Of course, they will be absolutely enthralled and give you 100% of their attention - they've been waiting all summer to have this book read to them.

4. Create a new schedule plan. No more beach days; no more waking up at 10am or later; no more having the use of a restroom ANY time of the day; no more use of the phone anytime of the day; no more eating whenever you want; and no more peace and quiet.

Immanuel Kant and Emmanuel Levinas' optical theories of ethical creativity in the form of asymmetrical electromagnetic lensing in the mind were instrumental in the emergence of the electromagnetic Golden Age of Danish Science. In 2002 Harvard University, Massachusetts University and the Royal Danish Consulate held an international symposium to bring to the attention of the world, the social importance of this Golden Age. How A Simple Computer Simulation Will Save The World

What if a simple computer simulation could change the entire world and the field of science itself? It is possible that you can actually upload a photo or video through a computer simulation, and it will come to life because of its essence. An essence is any mark or imprint left of a real-life person, place, event, or thing. Any essences could come to life, as the impression still has all the details embedded in them, and are simulated into a visualized environment, where it is taken apart and put back together through reverse engineering!

If you could actually upload an entire cancer cell, reverse engineer it to figure out how cancer works, and then make them into healthy cells, we could do this in life, just because the essence is real! Imagine not only eradicating cancer, but we could also figure out new types of technology, not to mention new forms of science. Scientists would be able to come up with new, cleaner, and efficient types of energy, that isn't so hard on the environment and it's inhabitants, such as you and me. Imagine never running out of power or energy, which would then be more affordable, cheaper, and accessible!

This is like no other type of computerized environments, as it isn't just based on guess-work, or even building simulation from scratch, as you would already have the necessary resources when you upload or scan the essence into the virtual world! We could figure out how to eradicate and cure any and all known diseases, and the governments of the world wouldn't be able to censure or destroy it! This technology would literally give us back the 1000 years of science that we had lost through the Dark Ages, as this would give us a technologically advanced society in just a few short years, maybe up to a decade at most!

You would never run out of food or go hungry, as the scientists would be able to reproduce the foods and they would figure out how to genetically modify the foods so that they are nutritious and tasty! The scientists would learn how plants grow, so that they could make better foods, and how to grow them exponentially, and plentiful and even larger! The environment would improve substantially, as CO2 emissions would drop definitely. This would be the miracle technology that we would need!

How does having the technology of your dreams sound, say such as being able to go directly inside of a virtual reality game, to fight the malevolent aliens, and to save the good aliens who are just trying to help, the ones that they are at war with! To save our planet in your own way, in your own personal space, in your own virtual reality simulation! And not to mention the better ways to communicate, as the process would be unlimited and have an ease of use. If we could dream big, and make this a total reality, the world would possibly be at peace!

Having a pet would be much more simple as well, because the food would be plentiful and healthy, improved for that matter! You would literally be able to cure your own pet, because that type of care would be easy to use once society had advanced. You wouldn't have to euthanize your pets just because they got had a broken leg, nor would you have to put them down just because you couldn't pay for veterinary costs. You would be able to live longer with your pets, and you would live longer also.

This technology is known as Essence Generation and Simulation, as the simulation would allow scientists to figure out problems, while the generation would allow the researchers the necessary tools to fix any and all problems. Such advances like making traffic safer, fighting against violent criminals and figuring out who was innocent and who was guilty. It would allow the law enforcement to weed out who actually committed the crime, and who was just at the wrong place at the wrong time! Essence Generation and Simulation would power the world for all of time, better than solar, wind, biofuel, and much more! Nothing is off-limits when you have a technologically advanced society, which this science would allow.

Across the nation it is becoming more and more difficult to recruit classroom teachers. It is not that we are lacking in young folks with special ideology for making a difference in the lives of children and adolescents, it is just that the job is exceeding tough with ever-increasing expectations plus the salary is generally quite low when compared with other professional opportunities with equal education. In addition, no matter how hard a teacher works and applies him/herself, kids are the variables - some get it; some don't; sadly, some won't. But having taught students, future teachers, and new hires for over 45 years, I can tell you that it is fun, exciting, and rewarding job, coupled with bits or worry and frustration. No other profession keeps you young through the insight of kids or on top of understanding and thinking of young minds. It is fascinating, awesome, and gratifying.

Because it is hard to find teachers in most locales, alternatives have been implemented. This includes alternative licensure, teaching full time while earning a degree, hiring long-term substitute teachers, team and co-teaching, recalling retired teachers to service, and many more clever methods. These choices have been effective overall, especially when a well-organized mentoring program is also instituted. Instead of a new teacher being handed keys and a grade book, s/he also receives a hands-on, committed guide and coach to help establish a successful first year of instruction (and the many to follow). The mentor must be wise, well-versed, attentive, and strong with experience in teaching and leading. So what characteristics constitute the ideal new teacher? Being porous and permeable.

Now you may be wondering why porous and permeable are prime traits. In my years as a mentor/coach, these two ingredients indicate a new professional who is ready to learn, try, listen, revise, readjust, realign, and bring understanding and achievement to all students. Porousness allows for absorbing new ideas, techniques, and methods while permeability permits the spongy intake of concepts, designs, and new ways of thinking, explaining, and applying knowledge. Teachers with these skills are easy to work with as they take every suggestion and build it into their repertoire of teaching practice and manipulate it to meet the needs of their particular students. Remember the part about students being the variable? Since no student learns or thinks in exactly the same way at the same time about the same thing, a teacher requires an incredible supply of talents to modify lessons in numerous ways. It is part of the thrill as well as part of the challenge of the classroom.

When I have had new teachers fresh from college or veterans who have moved to my district who are included in our introduction courses, the porous/permeable types soar. Norms for the Classroom Set the Stage for Maximum Learning

Having taught school for many decades, a first day activity always included establishing classroom norms. This involved discussion with students about appropriate behavior in the classroom and expectations of the teacher as well as of the students. When I was engaged with kindergarten or first graders, this procedure was quite productive as these students were new to school and unsure of classroom and playground operations. But as children progress through school they already are fully aware of conduct expectancies such as arriving on time, keeping hands and feet to themselves, respecting classmates, and so forth. While students do not always adhere to these norms, they are well versed in their meaning and the teacher's anticipation that they will follow these guidelines so that a fruitful year of learning can ensue.

Sound norms free the teacher to teach. When attention is given to the instructor, promptness is in place, and mutual respect reigns, great academic achievement is possible. When kids are naughty, late, and cellphone-dependent, education becomes a trial. In society we have norms we observe (some people more so than others) that enable us to accomplish our tasks. Politeness and professionalism are hallmarks of success in school, at home, and in the world. Having been raised in a home where respect and attention to duty and responsibilities were automatic expectations, I am surprised when I work with students and their parents as well as perspective teachers and new teachers to find that manners are not universal or engrained and so guidance and explanation are indispensable.

In my job now as field service supervisor for student teachers and mentor and coach for new hires, I am shocked at the norms I now must address, norms that in the past would have been unthinkable and completely unnecessary. These consist of dressing professionally, turning off cellphones and other electronic devices, and using suitable language. I won't even wander into tobacco usage - smokeless and otherwise, unending, bottomless cups of coffee and soda, or coming late and leaving early. If it did, this essay would become a tome.

Today's fashions offer jeans with holes, torn T-shirts, short shirts that reveal skin and body parts, low-slung shirts - also very revealing, flip flops, butt-skimming skirts and dresses, and other casual choices for attire. If this young under-grad or graduate were in banking or the medical profession, can you imagine such clothing being donned? Why is it that many potential teachers and new hires select such clothing? While teachers demand respect as professionals, they often forget the value of appearance in reflecting this role. Dressing well is critical - covered and all parts tucked away.

Another frightening crucial norm is relieving participants of cellphone/electronics addiction. When a teacher enters a classroom there is plenty of work to be done without interruption especially from calls and text messages. In trainings and in observations, I hear dings and chimes and watch teachers glance furtively and most often not discreetly at screens that scream for attention or they actually return calls while I stand mouth agape or students stare as they are required to remain engaged and on task. How ludicrous! And of course with secondary students (and many little ones as well), cellphones run rampant in their hands with constant and instant connection deemed a necessity. No cellphones for teachers or students should be an immediate action of school administration. Teaching is a difficult responsibility and no time should be wasted on dings and dongs.

Finally, there is the issue of appropriate language. Swearing in movies and on television has tumbled over into everyday life. Yes, there has long been profanity, but it seems to have overtaken mouths and brains. Stroll through almost any school hallway or cafeteria and evil words will attack your ears. Continue onto the playground and the swearing will likely intensify. A cursory "Not appropriate language" may be heard as a reprimand, but it usual has little to no effect. But actually, you can go almost anywhere - beach, mall, or baseball game - and profanity resounds. When did the "F-word" become the sole term to express anything and everything? In the last two years this has become a needed norm requiring several corrections when college-age students participate in debate.

Norms are excellent for maintaining discipline and clarifying expectations. They provide a reference for behavior as they define routines and procedures. While in the past a quick review was all it took as students knew and understood good manners, today more perusal and careful examination of what promotes learning and what rips it away are essential ingredients to the first day welcome. With norms clarified and in place, the rest of the year can leap and zip along with a brisk, organized, solid educational pace.
